DUMBELL TRAINING // Add dumbbell work to your workout today. Want a quick way to boost the intensity and calorie burn of your workout? Switch part of your routine from machines to dumbbells. Why? Here are just a few of the benefits that working with dumbbells can bring to your workout: While machines control your movement through a particular exercise's range of motion, dumbbells provide no such stability. With dumbbells, you are responsible for providing the stability through the range of motion. Bad thing? Nope, this improves your sense of stability, coordination and balance, burns more calories, improves your core strength, is much better for toning and has increased weight bearing properties (which is critical in delaying or reducing the effects of osteoporosis).

So, where do you start? Keep it simple. For your next workout try switching over from one of your normal machine exercises. Start with a weight about 20% lower than your usual weight on the machine (it will tend to be a little harder), and keep the sets and reps the same. Remember that you are now responsible for providing the stability, as opposed to the machine, so engage that core, and hold the rest of your body still as you move the dumbbell through the range of motion.
